"My mentor and teacher, Kathe Kowalski, taught me to listen to my work. She always told me, 'When your photographs start speaking back to you, that's when you know you're making the right work.'" –Latoya Ruby Frazier
Born and raised in the economically-challenged rust belt city of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Frazier uses the conventions of social documentary "to probe and upend traditional narratives of urban growth and the triumph of industry." The compelling narrative she tells with her black-and white family photos is on display through Oct. 6 in the three-artist show Backstory, another excellent exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
