I celebrated the longest day of the year in part by browsing through the June 2014 edition of PDN (Photo District News), which includes their 2014 Photo Annual winners. Well worth a look at your local bookstore, or at the PDN website. Above is one of the award winners that caught my eye. It's by Weston Fuller, an advertising, editorial and fine art photographer based in Salt Lake City. This shot, part of a series of "constructed montages that juxtapose food items with how they originate in nature in an effort to educate individuals on what they are actually eating," was a winner in the Student Work category. In the corporate design/self-promo winners category, one of the most striking images was the shot above by David Emmite, a photographer in Portland, Oregon. According to PDN, he "adapted 'Somebody's Kid,' a personal series exploring the innocence of youths with military aspirations, into a printed self-promo piece, postcards and a mini book." Ocean Beach by Douglas Ljungqvist was one of the winners in the photo book category. His book is a topographic study of a 1940s New Jersey beach resort, and was photographed from 2009 to 2012, just before the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. These are just the tip of the visual iceberg – check out more winning images in the magazine or online.
